Quick Review of Submission Guidelines for the writer with Attentions Deficit Disorder tempered with impatience.
We are going to put out a huge- fantastic- final print issue in January of 2010- and it will contain not only our Unusual Alien LifeForms Contest Winners- but stories from the top three vote winners of July online 2009.  Beginning April 2010- we will offer online (always free to read) and a pdf version of the magazine- again with stories completely unique and different from the online version.

A fund drive is going on now- and if you are able, please donate.  If not, then  remember we will still publish our issues quarterly- there just won't be a physical print issue.  We are looking into the variety of publication options out there, and maybe we can find a way to get our magazine noticed by more readers...you can do your part to keep us alive by telling everyone to stop by- read some stories, leave a note in the guestbook, and maybe sent a dollar our way.  We aren't going away- we just have to cut back a little...but we will be offering more money for our stories- so as authors you  will benefit from our decision to save money and temporarily forgo a quarterly print issue.  Please see our new payscale- effective April 2010.

If things change and we find we can put out more print issues- we will tell you asap.

1.  What we are looking for: Flash fiction (stories under 1000 words) and short stories under 6000 words (although we might consider longer works-but please send an inquiry first) We like sci-fi, fantasy,  and mild horror. ( a wide range of speculative fiction)  Character driven stories with strong plots. What we don't want: Graphic violence, sexually explicit material, and bad language: While we feel that an occasional cuss word may be in line with certain themes, foul language (esp. excessive use of expletives) will cause us to reject your story!  If you believe you can't convey your story in clean language, this isn't the place for you to submit. Not sure what we like?  Read a few of the stories online to get an idea. Normal response time < 2 weeks.  If you have not heard from us in 4 weeks- send an inquiry.  We do get busy and sometimes forget.

2.  Include your (real) name, byline (if different) mailing address, word count, email address and a short bio with every submission.  Put the title and your byline at the beginning of the story.  Copy and paste all this material into our submission form and then hit the submit button.  We occasionally still accept stories pasted into the body of the email- but we will not open any attachments.  Inquires are welcome- but unless you put something into the subject line to indicate your request- it most likely will end up deleted.  We get too much junk mail to sift through all the 'hellos' or 'this is urgent, please reply'. A good way to get ignored or deleted is to  not follow our guidelines.  Single space between lines, double space between paragraphs.  12 pt. Times New Romans  font. Use italics, not _symbols_ or **special** markings when you want them. A brief synopsis is nice.

3.  Send only one story per submission. (no multiple submissions, unless it's poetry - then you can send two or three at the most)  Please- no simultaneous submissions.  We would hate to get a story we like only to hear that you've already sold it.  Wait until you hear from us (or from someone else) before sending it out again.

4.  We pay 1/4 cent per word.  Poetry earns a byline only (no cash).  Minimum payment $3.00.  Max $20.00.  Stories in print earn a contributor copy (authors outside the continental US may receive only a pdf copy)  We hold two writing contests per year- and pay cash prizes.  No entry fees. (but they are always theme related)
Beginning April 2010- stories under 1000 words will receive $5.00 (flat rate)
1000-3,000-  $10.00   Over 3,000 (up to 6,000) $15.00.
Reprints will be offered a flat rate of $5.00- regardless of word count.  Please be honest when you submit a reprint. (for legal and moral issues)
Our copy editor will make the decision of final word counts- and stories with too many and, buts, yets, or other unecessary words will be edited...if you send in 1,050 words and use too many adjectives or ands and buts and yets, and other such stretchers- we will not be amused, and we will cut out the excess verbage, but we will let you know, yet we won't pay you extra money for trying to be cute, as we all want strong, well written stories that keep the readers attention without pushing it.  If you can say it in 5 words, don't stretch it into 15 by turning on the adjective and adverbs....flashy ain't always best.
In other words- keep your story moving along- proofread twice- and keep it tight. I refer you to #5 on our guidelines....

5.  New authors are welcome!  Always proofread your story carefully.  Have someone else look it over for you.  If you deliberately misspell a word- tell us!  Our copy editor goes over almost every story  and corrects as much as she can (grammar, excessive use of commas and speech tags)- but we like to keep her intake of caffeine and Xanax to a minimum.  All stories accepted may have some minor editing done. (starting every other paragraph off with But, And or He.....don't do it!)  We are working on a page to help out beginners, remind already published writers, and even refresh our old memories.  When it's done, we will add a quick link to it here.
